I Had My Eyeliner Tattooed and Here’s What Happened…

First things first, I LOVE EYELINER. I think it compliments the windows to the soul beautifully.

For the past seven years, I have been intrigued with permanent eyeliner and have been researching it on and off. Why does this intrigue me?

  • I have applied eyeliner nearly everyday for TWENTY years.
  • Out of my entire makeup regimen, applying eyeliner takes the longest and requires the most focus.
  • It’s the only part of my makeup regimen that I find myself taking off and starting over (to the women whose eyeliner exactly mirror each eye, I salute you).
  • I love the affect of eyeliner and how it naturally enhances the lash line.
  • I don’t love how I walk around with smudged eyeliner sometimes for hours without knowing.

I say all of that to say this: the idea of getting the benefits of eyeliner without the everyday hassle kept the idea bouncing around in my mind for almost a decade and today, I finally took the plunge.

I only had one requirement when searching for someone that offered this service: before and after photos. I was NOT about to let someone tattoo my face before reviewing their work. One of the local spas I use is Skin RX, and since they offered the service, I started there. I was pleased with the before and after photos and had a consultation directly with the person who would administer the application. I liked how she was adamant she used the natural lash line as her guide as I was looking for a natural look that would compliment my existing lash line.

When I arrived for my appointment, I was taken to a room and laid down. She confirmed the color I wanted applied (blackest black to match my lashes). My existing eye makeup was removed and numbing cream was applied. I kept my eyes closed for 20 minutes while the numbing cream did it’s thing. When she came back in, she removed the cream and used a saline to clean my eyes. She had me open and close my eyes as she did this which caused a little bit of stinging but it only lasted around thirty seconds. Next, she started the tattoo gun.

I have to admit, the sound of the tattoo gun gave me a little bit of anxiety. Because of my low tolerance for pain, I was bracing myself to endure the pain of this experience. Surprisingly enough, there was zero pain! There was slight vibration, but I didn’t mind it at all and this was a pain free experience for me.

Two hours later, she gave me a mirror and I was very pleased with the results! I may add a wing every once in a while but other than that, this girl is excited to throw on some mascara and head out the door. Heck, I may even just apply it at the red light and really save myself some time. 🙂

before and immediately after

As you can see, that lash line is poppin’ and as excited as I am to see how mascara will compliment this eyeliner, I have to wait seven days before applying any eye makeup. Aftercare includes applying a topical cream a few times a day for the next few days and tenderness is expected to last 48 hours. There is literally no downtime associated with this procedure. I’m able to wash my face and shower as normal and was able to drive immediately afterwards. In the before and after photos, you’ll notice there is no redness either, however I do not have sensitive skin, so this may vary for each experience. It’s been about six hours and while they are tender to touch, I otherwise can’t tell I’ve had anything done and have gone about my day as normal.

So do recommend this permanent makeup service? It depends. If you regularly wear eyeliner, I say YES! At $400, this was not cheap, but affordable considering I have been wanting it for seven years and it gives me eighteen months of perfect eyeliner that I don’t have to apply. This includes a touch up so I will go back in six weeks to have them touched up. I am considering doing half my bottom lashes but want to see how this does before making my final decision, but so far so good!

I later went and got the bottom lashes done. I lost the photos from that experience, but got them touched up a few weeks later and couldn’t be more pleased.

Have you had permanent makeup services? I’d love to hear about your experience and recommendations!
