Growing up between Tennessee cities, Knoxville and Chattanooga, allowed me get familiar with both cities and anyone who has grown up around Chattanooga knows about Rock City, a tourist attraction on Lookout Mountain in Lookout Mountain, Georgia. Opened in May 1932, the attraction gained popularity after the owners hired a painter in 1935 to paint “See Rock City” on barns throughout the Southwest and Midwest United States. By 1969, the painter had painted over 900 barns in 19 states. Talk about knowing how to advertise prior to the internet! I remember seeing these barns growing up and have a shadow of a memory of visiting Rock City when I was a little girl.

For the past 28 years, Rock City has hosted an Enchanted Garden of Lights winter event and I was able to visit with my parents this year. They make it easy to purchase tickets online; $32 for adults and $22 for kids 12 and under.

I can’t recall that I’ve ever walked through an outdoor event at night so this was unique and they really did go all out with the lights, so it was a beautiful visual experience. I was impressed that we were able to explore the whole property, just as if we had visited during the day. They even have a Starbucks plunked up there on top of the mountain for your favorite caffeinated beverages!

Enjoy the photos below. They aren’t the greatest because it was pitch black outside but it gives you a good idea of the experience.

It is said one can see seven states from the top of lookout mountain.

At some point, I would like to visit again perhaps this summer to see Rock City during the day and get some daylight photos. If you’re ever traveling through, this is a nice half day adventure!
