Is boho-farmhouse a thing? Like, is it an actual/official design style? Not sure, but I think that’s what I end up with after I design a space and step back and look at it. Nevertheless, I’m so excited to share this bathroom design that was born inside my brain and turned out exactly as I imagined it!
First, let me give you a bit of history on this crazy house we bought. Three words: TINY FIXER UPPER. When I say tiny, I mean 576 square feet, and when I say fixer upper, I mean gut it and start over. And that’s just want I did with this bathroom! Just look at what I started with:
So I did this:
…and this:
…and ended up with this:
So how did I get here? A few things:
- I relocated the bathroom. The original one was right next to the front door and just didn’t work with my open floor concept plan I wanted to do.
- Because I was working with extremely limited space, I made sure to sketch out the whole thing on graph paper, along with measurements and used each square to signify one foot of space. This guaranteed everything would fit and I knew how many inches I had for a vanity, shower, linen closet, etc.
- I paid attention to every single detail. Floor width, ceiling height, shower head placement. Basically, I obsessed over this space for a month.
- I focused on functionality – I stood in the space before it had walls and washed my hands at the imaginary sink and reached for the hand towel. I made Kris stand beside me where his sink would go and we stretched our arms out to see if we had enough space. I stepped out of the imaginary shower to walk to the closet.
- I focused on storage – a small space is no joke and neither is my beauty routine. I needed a place to store all my bathroom needs. I laid it all out and put it in containers and used my kitchen cabinets to confirm how many shelves I would need. I wasn’t playing around about this.
Lucky for you, I saved the design I sketched! The only thing I changed was the curtain divider for the toilet and linen area. After we finished, I decided it wasn’t needed because the linen cabinet was so beautiful. I normally won’t put an exposed toilet in a bathroom (bring on the water closets!), but I couldn’t justify losing the space that a wall would take up so here we are. I actually don’t hate it and this bathroom is honestly my favorite of the three I’ve designed. Ok, back to my point… my sketch:
Yep, that’s right, I included a full blown walk in closet behind the bathroom that you walk straight into as soon as you step out of the shower. I’m patting myself on the back for this one. Oh, and check out that window that would have been above the toilet… that got ripped out real quick.
Oh, and look at this treasure. Before the window was removed, Kris snapped this photo of me getting ready to cut tile for my shower.
Looking at this photo now has me wondering how on earth I got through this major renovation! I mean, look at the mess behind me… how did it ever turn into what it is today? The girl in this photo definitely has a “how hard can it be” mentality that is quite useful and has served me well throughout life, but also gets her into a bunch of these messes. She’s also quite ambitious, determined, and tenacious though, so that’s helpful to make sure these crazy projects actually get done. Given this is the only bathroom in the house, I was quite motivated to get it finished up!
For context, my back is facing the vanity and I’m looking right where the toilet is sitting today. The opening to the bathroom is on my right. It’s hard to tell with all the framing and insulation behind me, but trust me; that’s where I am. 😊
This was my first time using a wet saw. It was quite easy to learn and while I didn’t have formal training, I picked it up just fine and could do it again if I had to…
You can see the window we kept to my left.
So now let’s see some more of this finished bathroom!
So let’s start with the vanity. I love everything about it. First, it’s custom designed by yours truly meaning there’s not another one out there like it. That’s because even though I got the vanity base from Home Depot, I used a local countertop business to create the countertop and designed it myself meaning I chose the design, the material, the shape of the bowls and the size of the back and side splash. I went with corian countertops because they are more affordable than quartz, granite and marble, but are much more nicer than laminate. I don’t regret this decision because it honestly looks and feels like natural stone.
Next, I chose the faucets and hardware from different places and while pricey, installing the faucets into the backsplash is the only way to go because it not only looks gorgeous and high end, it allows for easy cleaning because you don’t have to wipe around them.
For the first time ever, I installed hand soap dispensers into the countertop. I really like that I did this and would do it again! Very convenient and looks so clean.
While I have had a clock between mirrors in my previous bathroom, I have never had a method to have daily used items at reach sitting right on top of the sink and I am applauding myself for coming up with this idea. I can never go back to storing things under the sinks and in drawers for our daily use items again! This is so convenient and looks perfect! The sink always looks a little empty between sinks but I’m always torn on making it look cluttered or keeping it nice looking. Now I don’t have to decide! I can have everything right there without it looking cluttered up or messy. I really love this set up!
I even used some fun liner on the inside of the drawers.
My favorite thing about designing a space is the final touches stage. This is where I get to make something even more beautiful and make it unique to my style. I had a lot of fun with this! Check it out.
My lovely husband is happy to give me free reign on home design and while he will offer his advice if solicited, he is wonderful to just roll with whatever crazy idea I come up with, so I didn’t ask what he wanted here. He just got this and happily brushes his teeth here. He’s got easy access to clippers, tweezers, floss and q-tips. I’ve since changed the candle out for three bottles of his cologne.
Next up, there’s my side that is very tailored for me.
I opted to have daily items at hand reach and put them in matching jars to match Kris’ side. This includes, hair ties, pins and clips as well as my exfoliating cotton ovals and perfume. It just makes getting ready easy, you know? I can’t tell you how many times I’ve scrounged around for a hair tie, clip or pin while holding my hair up. This has solved that completely!
You should know that the oval exfoliating cotton pads from Target are everything! Perfect for toner and gives your face a little extra scrub. I can never go back to regular cotton rounds! One problem with cotton ovals is there are extremely rare options for cotton holders that are made to hold the oval shape. There are round cotton holders galore, but oval? Not so much. I say all this to tell you that I finally found one after years of looking, and it’s gorgeous! I love that it comes with a matching box for anything! The obvious use would be q-tips, but I loved it better for hair clips! I have yet to find another oval cotton holder outside of this bamboo one, so if you have any you’ve found, please share them below for us oval cotton pad lovers!
Speaking of shower, here she is!
This is where I feel like the boho comes in, especially with the curtain! I also did something for this shower that I haven’t done in the past. First off, I’ve never had 10 foot ceilings so the gap at the top with the standard shower curtain was bothering me. I did some research and come to find out, you can buy shower curtains that are longer than the standard length, so I did just that! This one is 84” and I raised the shower curtain rod up. This made a big difference in the look of the shower, especially when the curtain is closed.
Remember how I mentioned a built the closet right across from the shower. Well here it is! Im standing in the shower while taking this photo so you can see what I’ve done here. You’ve got a place to hang your towel on the left as you walk into the closet and a full length mirror on the right to check your outfit before you walk out. I love that the runner stretches all the way to the shower to step on when we get out to keep the floor dry.
While I don’t love this iPhone wide angle photo as it distorts the photo a bit (the sink is 72” wide!), this gives you a better idea of what this space looks like. The closet goes all the way behind the length of the vanity! I know this is not much compared to todays closet standards, but remember, this is a 574 square foot home, so this walk-in closet is significant!
Considering the original design of this house had little to no closet space for clothes, this is amazing! I’m really proud of Kris and Konnor for installing this closet system… they did great! I know that mint color looks a little much right now but once clothes are in and storage is nestled on top of those shelves, most of it is covered up and your left with just the right amount of mint! This rug has just enough mint in it for it to match marvelously.
Here’s another angle of the space. The full length mirror truly is in the right place for when you’re finished getting dressed to take one last look before you walk out.
And here we are leaving the closet. You can see the shower directly in front. I really love this design as it allows immediate access to your clothes as soon as you step out of the shower. I know a lot of people have their closets in the bedroom, but this really is the better way to go! It also helps keep your bedroom tidy and closet doors blocking you from putting your bed any where you’d like.
Upon exit of the bathroom, you can see the shower on the left and the closet on the right, followed by the vanity, toilet and linen cabinet.
Again, I really love that I went a little risky on the design with a runner instead of a traditional bath mat. As you can see, it also allows a rug to stand on when you’re at the sink brushing your teeth and whatnot. I really like having this option because I get cold easily!
The linen cabinet wasn’t cheap as I had it custom made, but it was worth every single penny. It’s so incredibly deep, I can fit SO MUCH. It holds towels, washcloths, hygiene items, hair tools, and the best part is that I had a plug installed in the back so it keeps all the chargers for toothbrushes, face cleansers, etc. charged up without having the cords on the counter. This is an amazing option to have!
Additionally, I have to give kudos to Kris and Konnor again for installing the pocket door. It works seamlessly and allows for so much space saved since I didn’t have to worry about the swing.
Here’s those final touches I was talking about. I can’t resist all the cutesy decor items… life’s too short to feel like you’re living in a hotel! Make your space your own by adding quirky unique things that will make you and your guests smile when they walk in. It’s just decor… buy the cheaper items so you can switch it out every couple of years. That’s what I do!
I custom made the toilet paper holder with a leftover shelf from this shelf and a paper towel holder. Just screwed it together and have the best set up!
I added some lovely organization in the cabinet above the toilet because you know, organization. 😍
I used these containers and these labels. I’m currently revisiting labels so stay tuned for an update.
Well, that wraps up this farmhouse boho bathroom tour! I hope you liked it and I’ve given you some kind of inspiration for your own bathroom! Please do share if you are inspired… it would make my day!
