Ohio’s Highest Point: Campbell Hill
Last updated: July 15, 2023
In a recent visit to Bellefontaine, Ohio, my husband and I stood on the oldest concrete street in America and the shortest street in America.
Additionally, you will find Campbell Hill, Ohio’s highest point located in this town. With an elevation of 1,549, it proudly sits at number 43 on the list of state high points, right above Indiana. Interestingly enough, the Ohio high point is only a couple hours away from the Indiana high point and they are right next to each other on the list with Indiana being number 44, so technically, you could knock out both 43 and 44 on the list of state high points in one day if you’re feeling spunky.
There is no hike. You can drive to within just a few feet of the summit, so get cozy in the car and just bee-pop your way right on up.
The peak is the former home of the Bellefontaine Air Force Station, where the 664th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron maintained a Cold War early warning radar. Currently, the summit is occupied by the Ohio Hi-Point Career Center.
Campbell Hill is named for Charles Campbell of Bellefontaine. He owned the land during the early 1900s. At the turn of the last century, a small marble stone was placed on the spot marking it as the highest point in Ohio with an elevation of 1549.09 feet.
As someone who likes (ok, LOVES) lists, it’s hard to know there is a high point in every state and not visit them all to check them off, albeit, I’d need to do quite a bit of training to reach the top five high points (but don’t try me… I’ll do it!).
Check out my travel page for more state high points I’ve visited!
